Hosting a Reception After Your Elopement

Eloping is an incredible way to celebrate love—intimate, intentional, and all about the two of you (and maybe a handful of friends and family if you wish). But just because you chose to exchange vows in a private setting doesn’t mean you have to miss out on celebrating with your favorite people! A post-elopement reception is the perfect way to bring everyone together, relive the magic of your elopement, and create new memories with the people who mean the most to the two of you.

Whether you’re envisioning a cozy backyard dinner under twinkling lights or a lively evening filled with music and dancing, your reception should reflect your unique love story and what makes you, well, you! Here’s how to plan a celebration that feels just as meaningful as your elopement itself.

And if you’re still wondering if having an elopement is right for you and better than a wedding, check out my blog that answers the famous question: Should I elope of have a wedding?

Why Have a Reception After Your Elopement?

Eloping gives you the freedom to say “I do” your way—whether that’s on a mountaintop at sunrise, barefoot on the beach, or in one of PNW’s most beautiful rainforests. But sharing the joy with your family and friends can still be important. A post-elopement reception allows you to:

  1. Celebrate your marriage with loved ones without the pressure of a traditional wedding.

  2. Share photos, videos, or stories from your elopement day.

  3. Create a relaxed and fun atmosphere where you can truly enjoy the moment.

  4. Design an event that’s uniquely yours, without rigid wedding-day expectations.

Your elopement was about you—your reception should be too!

Setting a Budget That Works for You

Before diving into planning, take a step back and think about what you truly want from this celebration. Do you want a big party, or something more low-key? Knowing your priorities will help you set a realistic budget and focus on what matters most.

Consider these factors:

  • Venue – Are you renting a space, or hosting at home? After my wife and I eloped, we hosted our reception after our elopement in our backyard and had an open house for guests to come and go. We loved that for us! Depending on the size of the guests you want, you may want to opt in for a private event center near you. Check with your local city parks, or event centers!

  • Food & Drinks – Are you thinking of having catered dinner, maybe even opting to get some food trucks, or simply do a potluck, or a backyard grill day? The options are endless when it comes to food.

  • Decor & Atmosphere – Are you envisioning a themed setup, or keeping it simple?

  • Entertainment – Live music, a DJ, or a playlist and speakers?

Remember, an amazing celebration doesn’t have to mean an expensive one. Get creative with what you have, and don’t be afraid to break the mold!

Picking the Perfect Reception Venue

Your reception venue should feel like an extension of your elopement—authentic, comfortable, and reflective of your style as a couple. Some ideas include:

  • A cozy cabin or mountain lodge for that adventurous, intimate feel.

  • A backyard or family home for a relaxed, personal vibe.

  • Your favorite restaurant or brewery for a stress-free gathering.

  • A beach bonfire or campsite if you love the outdoors. Check with your city parks too to reserve the picnic shelters!

Be sure to check out my blog on my top most affordable outdoor venues in Washington. Hint, these venues are not just for your elopement or intimate wedding, you can have your reception in many of these places here too for a couple hundred bucks!

No matter where you choose, make sure it aligns with your vision and comfortably fits your guest list.

Crafting Your Guest List

One of the best things about eloping is avoiding the stress of a massive guest list—but your reception still lets you bring your people together. When deciding who to invite, ask yourselves:

  • Who has been a meaningful part of your journey?

  • Who do you genuinely want to celebrate with?

  • What size gathering feels right for you?

This isn’t about inviting out of obligation—it’s about surrounding yourselves with love and joy. So if there’s that one aunt or uncle that may sour the mood, perhaps excluding them from this gathering may be the right choice for you.

Reception After Eloping Invitations

Once you’ve decided to host a post-elopement reception, it’s time to let your guests know! Your invitations should reflect the theme and style of your celebration—whether that’s formal, casual, or anything in between!

  • Wording Ideas: Keep it simple and clear. You might say something like, “We eloped! Now, let’s celebrate together!” or “Join us for a joyful reception as we celebrate our marriage”, or "Surprise! We eloped! But it wouldn't be official without celebrating with the people we love most. Come celebrate with us”

  • Digital vs. Printed: E-vites are a great eco-friendly and budget-conscious choice, while printed invitations add a special touch.

  • Timing: Send out invites at least a few months in advance, especially if travel is involved. For example, we eloped in April and had our reception after our elopement in July and had a great turnout for guests!

  • RSVPs: Make it easy for guests to confirm with an online RSVP option or reply card.

A thoughtful invitation sets the tone for your celebration and builds excitement for your big gathering!

Personalizing Your Reception After Your Elopement

Your elopement was uniquely yours, and your reception should be too! Add personal touches that reflect your love story:

  • Photos & Videos – Share a slideshow, printed images, or your album from your elopement.

  • Special Music – A playlist of songs that mean something to you both.

  • Signature Drinks – Cocktails (or mocktails) inspired by your adventure.

  • Handwritten Notes – A thank-you letter at each place setting.

Every detail can be a reflection of your journey together, making the celebration feel deeply personal and special.

Food & Drinks: Keep It Simple, Keep It You

There’s no rule that says you have to do a formal dinner—so think about what fits your vibe. Some fun and relaxed ideas include:

  • A taco bar or BBQ for a casual, interactive feel.

  • A picnic-style grazing table with meats, cheeses, and fresh fruit.

  • A food truck for a unique and fun dining experience.

  • Appetizers, dessert & drinks only if you want to keep things light.

Want to make it even more special? Incorporate a dish or drink that means something to you—maybe the meal from your first date or a recipe passed down in your family.

Making It Fun: Entertainment & Activities

Your reception doesn’t need a rigid timeline, but a little structure can help things flow. Here are a few ways to keep guests engaged:

  • Live music or an awesome playlist – Set the mood with tunes that feel right for you.

  • A casual toast or storytelling session – Share highlights from your elopement adventure.

  • Lawn games or a campfire – Keep things laid-back and interactive.

  • A photo booth or Polaroid station – Capture fun, candid moments with your guests.

  • Have your wedding album out or perhaps set up a projector to share some of your favorite photos from your wedding day.

The goal? A reception that feels natural and effortless, with plenty of opportunities to connect and have fun.

Capturing the Memories

Even though your elopement photographer likely documented your private vows, don’t forget to capture the reception too! Consider hiring a photographer to document the event, or set up a DIY photo station where guests can snap pictures. You can also encourage guests to share their photos with you later through a shared album on your phones so you can relive the night through their eyes!

Final Thoughts: Celebrate Your Way

Your elopement was about doing things your way, and your reception should be no different. Whether it’s an intimate dinner or a big bash, focus on what feels right to you. This is your chance to celebrate your love, your way—so make it meaningful, make it memorable, and most of all, make it fun!

Here’s to celebrating love on your terms! Cheers!
